The Mill Iron Road End on Muskegon River features free, paved parking and a leisurely 2-hour paddle downstream to Muskegon Lake.  Along the way, logging era crib remnants, natural surroundings and wildlife are featured.   The river widens as it approaches US 31. Another option at Mill Iron is a one-hour upstream paddle that loops back to the main branch of Muskegon River at Mill Iron.  The loop provides viewing of native plants, fish, birds, turtles and other wildlife in quiet surroundings. Muskegon Lake is a 4,150 acre, scenic deep water recreational and commercial harbor, approximately 5 miles long from Muskegon River to the channel at Lake Michigan.   The channel area features the City of Muskegon's Pere Marquette Beach on the south side and Muskegon State Park sand dunes and camping on the north.  The NOAA Lake Michigan Field Station and the Coast Guard Station are located along the channel where interpretive signage about the area's maritime hitory is featured.   Restaurants and public transportation are availalbe at Pere Marquette Park.
